Hello, future. So long, compromise.

How Optima Hybrid Technology Works

Outfitted with a motor that runs off a long-range battery, the 2017 Optima Plug-In Hybrid has the ability to switch between an electric and gas engine to provide greater fuel economy and more peace of mind. Let’s explore how.

All the information you need to stay efficient in one convenient display. The available multimedia interface1 informs you of your fuel economy, your gas or energy usage and much more.

New for 2017

The 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid is all new. In addition to the updated interior and exterior looks debuted on the fourth-generation Optima for the 2016 model year, the 2017 Optima Hybrid gets an all-new 2.0-liter gasoline direct-injection four-cylinder engine, replacing the outgoing 2.4-liter engine. A new, lighter, more compact lithium-ion battery pack (increased to 1.62 kWh capacity) handles the electron storage for the 38 kW electric hybrid motor, yet is more compact, no longer taking up trunk space.

A new Eco-DAS (Eco-Driver Assistance System) encourages drivers to coast at optimal times, further improving fuel economy, using a chime and light system on the instrument panel. An all-new aerodynamic treatment for the hybrid brings the Optima Hybrid’s coefficient of drag (Cd) to the lowest in the segment at 0.24.

Vehicle Summary

The 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid sits in the middle of Kia’s Optima sedan range, bracketed by the standard gasoline Optima and the more battery-reliant Optima PHEV. Rated at 39/46 mpg city/highway, the Optima Hybrid gets good but not class-leading mileage for a hybrid, placing it right in the hunt with competitive models such as the Toyota Camry Hybrid. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment.

The 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid’s new 2.0-liter GDI “Nu” engine, paired with the updated battery pack, delivers 154 hp, for a combined total of 193 hp from the hybrid drivetrain. The six-speed automatic transmission has been upgraded for the new model, promising smoother shifting. The battery pack is now 13 percent larger than the previous Optima Hybrid, despite the pack itself being smaller, packaged entirely beneath the load floor of the trunk. The new battery configuration allows a 60/40 split-folding rear seat.

The body of the Optima Hybrid, shared in its fundamental form with the other members of the Optima sedan lineup, gets special aerodynamic improvements for the Hybrid version, reducing its coefficient of drag to a segment-leading 0.24. An active grille shutter automatically opens and closes based on vehicle speed, optimizing aerodynamics while still allowing adequate engine cooling.

The 2017 Optima Hybrid also gets a host of new driver assistance technologies, including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), which can bring the vehicle to a complete stop (under the right circumstances) to avoid or mitigate crash damage in an emergency. Blind spot detection, automatic cruise control, lane departure warning, and front collision warning systems are also available. A multi-camera parking system makes maneuvering in tight spaces easier.

On the technology front, the 2017 Optima Hybrid offers Kia’s UVO3 infotainment system, which integrates smartphone functions and offers many of its own. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available, as is an upgraded AVN 4.0 satellite navigation system. A Harman/Kardon QuantumLogic surround sound audio system packs 10 speakers and 630 watts of power.

The cabin of the 2017 Optima Hybrid also sees upgrades, with more interior space and a Hybrid-specific instrument panel. Greater use of soft-touch materials and stitching accents along the dash and doors aim to provide a more premium feel. The seats were also upgraded, with the seat frame made stiffer to reduce vibration and the cushions now offering a combination of softer and firmer material in strategic areas to improve comfort. Heated and ventilated front seats with power adjustments are available.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awards the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid its highest score of five stars in all crash test results, noting that a rearview camera system is standard on all models of the Hybrid. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety hasn’t yet rated the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid, but it rates the structurally similar standard gasoline 2016 Optima sedan a Top Safety Pick+.

What We Think

If you’re into comfort and technology, the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid will suit you well. While the new Optima Hybrid no longer sports the bold design of its predecessor, the more subtly styled look of the 2017 model may find more fans, as well. Kia’s infotainment systems have been intuitive and easy to use for several years now, and the latest evolution of the system should only improve that. Drivers seeking precise road feel and high-speed handling will be disappointed, however, as driving dynamics have never been a strong point for the Optima.

Cool Fact

The 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid’s body structure is made of more than 50 percent advanced high-strength steel, and uses both hot-stamped components and structural adhesive to improve rigidity and reduce noise, vibration, and harshness.
